I have a 88 f250 that i think i might have messed up the transfer case. I was beginning to notice when i was coasting downhill that it was making a sound like i had a bad u joint. When i was under there checking the driveline, i decided to check the level in the transfer case and to my horror it was way way low. I looked through the filler hole and moved the chain, it had a little play but not too bad. Is this something that can be fixed without removing the TC? I noticed that you could pull the cover apart with it still being in the truck. Does anybody know specifically what the problem might be?
What kind of noise? Mine made a grinding nois eqhen coasting. turns out the hi low range selector hub and planet gears werw wore out from the oil pump failure in side. They are not very heavy and not to bad to go through. Most trucks 150 250 and 350 trucks had that one. If you find another you may have to use your tailshaft housing and front yoke. Not to bad to change if needed.
The only time it makes a sound is when you go downhill and let off the gas. It makes a clunk and thats about it. I checked out the driveline and the rearend, and there both good. There,s some loose motion somewhere in that TC.
Went to pic-a-part this morning, and they had 4 vehicles with a bw1356 TC in them. One was a newer bronco, but the output shaft was shorter and different , but it looked like i could take the shaft out of mine and put in this one and make it work. Is the input shaft the same from a f150 to a f250? Anyway, im going to take mine out tomorrow and see can i fix it, there just cant be much wrong with it. But if i cant get it going, how can i tell with is the best TC at the junkyard? They,re pretty reasonable too only 137.00 each. I just want to be damn sure if i get one ,it works and is in good shape
I cant verify the input shaft but my f150 is same size out put as my f350 and im betting the input is the same. I did swap output shaft and output tailhousing on my 1356. What ever you got i would open it up and look to see if it has oil pump failure. ( just spinning around on the out put shaft) if it has wore out the two lips cast into the case spun and pulled the pickup tube off. Good time to change the seals too.
The broncos have the nonslip yoke output and im almost certain they will work if you get they drive shaft out of it to. You may have to have it lengthened though.
I also had to swap fron output yokes. No prob though since i have a impact wrench. Think i used a 30mm or a 32mm for that big nut on the yoke. My f350 has the double ujoint joint and it takes a different yoke than the single ujoint.
Ok, i got it out and apart this morning. It all looks good except both of the plastic inserts are out of one of the shifter forks and are lying in the bottom of the case. Can this be my problem? The shifter fork looks like its in good shape can you just buy the plastic inserts?
The white ones in the low high range selector fork ? Be sure the selector hub didnt wear the soft fork. Look on ebay or google them. The local dealership could not get them for me. Seems like i found them with a little internet searching for a few bucks but the donor tcase i got had good ones. Any wear right there or in the case where the shift shaft goes through will let the selector hub float out of the splines in the planetary gear like mine did.
Just went to the transmission shop in town and got a couple of those plastic inserts for that shuft fork. When i got back and removed it i noticed it was completely wore out. He did have the whole fork for 50 bucks which i thought was kind high, but i guess ill just go back and get it
On second thought, i just ordered one on ebay for only 21 bucks. Im not in that big of a hurry. I noticed the slider gear that the shift fork goes on was just a little rough where it was rubbing on that aluminum fork, but i think it will clean up good with some sandpaper
