Hey guys. This is my 2nd IDI and I still like em! This one sports the factory turbo. I gotta say, still not impressed with power... My old IDI was a poor performer and this one is... "ok". Being a crew cab don't help either.
I know im probably beating a dead horse on this one but: Im wanting to crank a few more ponies out of this baby. I know on the old IDIs, you cut off the fishbowl and put on a better muffler... that's about it unless you added a turbo. Iv heard of cranking up the IP but that could be disastrous on a non-turbo application, so can I bottom it out on this IDIT? Or do I need to be careful still?
Also, I happen to have a tore-up Powerstroke sitting in the garage. Would swapping out turbos be an upgrade? Or is it too much work for the gain?
If it is a factory turbo get rid of the crushed down pipe. Check your timing and depending on how many miles ip and injectors may need to be replaced to freshen things up a bit. If you want to add fuel you need a pyrometer to check egts.
these are all old school mechanical engines with injection pumps and injectors being medium ware items.
this means there is no auto tuning as you know.so you have to keep the ip injectors fresh, and timing set manually from time to time.
the problem is,tuning up an idi today, means spending about the same to just replace a whole idi diesel engine so most don't do it.especially considering, they'll still run like a wounded low hp dog for years anyway.
it's getting to be just cheaper in some cases to just start with buying a 94-97 psd truck.many of those going for low bucks now.by low bucks i mean lower than buying a idi truck that needs a tune up and resolving all the oil and fuel leaks lol.
if you've got a good idi diesel truck that's worth the grand to freshen up and time, then go at it.they're still worth it.
If you get rid of the crushed down pipe, as stated, put a good reman ip and reman injectors, time it in right, then you will be happy with the results. I put a 3" exhaust elbow and 3" down pipe into a 4" straight exhaust. Made a difference. I'm pushing 80ccs of fuel. That made a big difference.
I've got my self talked in to trying to put a psd trubo on to my idi, but I think I'm going to find a second gernation trubo, there is more aftermarket support for them. and the bolts are on the top of the turbo. There are a couple threads on it.
I just put my idit back together with a new gasket kit, it seemed to help, I was hauling half a load of cows today at 80mph, before I could only do about 70
Pyro, max the fuel, crank the wastegate. From there, or before, put a good free flowing exhaust on there, if you cant do the elbow upgrade at least do the downpipe. Get it timed after turning up the fuel. If everything is in good shape that should net you 200whp give or take a few.
