Transfer case problem

I have a 79 F250 4x4 with what i believe to be an NP205 transfer case but it has no Id tag. Anyway if i use the 4x4 i have to get out and unlock the hubs to shift to neutral or 2 wheel drive. It doesnt matter whether i use high or low range every single time i use the 4x4 it cant be shifted at all, so is this normal or is there something wrong, other than that i have no other problens or funny noises from the t-case and once the hubs are unlocked it shifts smoothly into 2h or neutral. I think im just not shifting it properly but if somethings wrong i need to fix it asap as this is my daily driver. Thanks for any help!

It's normal. Back up a few feet before shifting out of 4wd to alleviate driveline bind.

Hopefully you already know not to drive in 4wd on pavement...

Sounds like normal NP205 behavior, the 205 locks the drivetrain via gears, unlike its weaker cousin the NP203 which uses a chain.

Like Devino said, back up a few feet....then you can disengage the gears.

Yep just have a little hand tension on the lever ready to go back to 2wd and blip the gas and back up a foot or so, should pop right out.

Ck your xfer case lever for tight hdwr and lube on the pivot points.

big ole ford,

it's also possible (in my experience) to shift out of 4H on the fly. the 205 t-case is designed so that you can do this...but only between 4H and 2H.

in other words, you ought to be able to move the shift lever out of 4H and into 2H while you're rolling. i find it's harder to shift once stopped and the gears come to rest.

when shifting from 4L to N or 2H, i slow down to near crawling speed and gently pull the lever out of 4L. if i time it right, it usually works...takes a little practice to get the right "feel".

only once in awhile do i need to resort to the "back up a few feet" trick...which always works!

hope this helps.
