transfer case mystery???

truck is 2001, F250, 7.3, 4wd
working fine until tonight
no drive to rear wheels in 2wd
drove home in 4wd high with front hubs unlocked
what's up?

That doesn't make sense to me but I'm no expert eother. If the front hubs were unlocked how did it move? Maybe the tranfer case slipped into neutral and when you shifted into 4wd HI it started working again. Is this an electric shift or manual?

There's a good chance the problem is a worn shift fork in the transfer case.
