this is what i have ,, looks like the top button has a broken tap , i am guessing there should be 3 tabs ,, and the rest , well there is no rest ,, could someone tell me what i need ,, or i just need a total kit ,, there is a horn button on dash that i what to lose
Look at the diagram in this post for your missing parts. I think MidFifty sells a kit with all of them. However, you will need a new horn button also due to the broken tabs and yes there are 3.
One more IMPORTANT note, this only works if you are still using the original steering column and gearbox, not if you have a power steering conversion installed.
i do plan on using the steering wheel ,, and i do plan on doing the power steering ,, how does that interfere with the horn ??
thanks
The problem is the horn wire runs thru the steering column down through the actual stock gear box. The gear box is mounted to the frame which allows the horn button to complete the ground and honk the horn. You won't be able to do that on a Toyota PS box or CPP like I used. Mid Fifty does sell a kit for $150 that is basically a bushing internal to the steering column and a switch outside the column that allows you to complete the ground that way. So it can be done but for a cost.
my luck.. try to save in 1 spot just spend in another !! lol looks like it might better to change steering wheel ????
or stay with the dash mount horn button
I tried a bunch of options last weekend and finally gave up. Better men than I have tried and failed also. There is just no getting around he fact that the steering column and box are grounded to the frame. You can get new tilt columns for as low as $250 but without a steering wheel. I think I will give it up and bite the $150 bullet. Look on Midfifty website and you can see how the solution works, I don't see any other way and when you look at what it is and how few they will sell you understand the cost.
Problem with changing the steering wheel is that AFAIK no one makes a steering wheel adapter for the stock column, and because of the column design you would still have the same problem with the horn. My suggestion would be to use the dash horn button until you can buy a replacement column and wheel. If you want to go the cheap way, you could find a column and steering wheel out of an 80s era Chevy van.
