Need some help been working on my 78 F100 with a 460 I had put my durspark ignition box back in cause the crappy mad 6a box went out and when I started the truck up it ran fine but then the factory volt meter started smoking so I shut the truck off and disconnected the battery but when I went to turn it back on the electrical system is dead. I've traced wires check all connections and fuses no wires are burnt up so I'm lost on it. Truck does have a one wire alternator on it but its been on the a good while but I haven't messed with anything else I've check fusable link at battery and its fine I just need some ideas on what to check I can't find anything. Thanks
Yes the multimeter came out I have 12 volts on both sides of the fusible link, and were it is fused together which would go to the old alternater and that's were it stops only wire that has any power it the red and orange wire from the plug going into the cab, the main power wire (the black and yellow one) has nothing from the start and Its all worked fine till the volt gauge in the instrument cluster started smoking and I pulled the pos battery cable off I traced and tested wires and connections all day and couldn't find anything but what I just said, its really got my stumped never seen something like this happen before.
Well after I did some more searching on the web I think I figured out my problem, after I first installed my 1 wire alt I cut and tapped up wires I didn't need but I never did connect the fusible link to the Cab power wire (black and yellow) to the power lug on the relay just wire nutted it to the yellow wire so I have no idea how I was getting power this whole time before this happened Im still stumped on it though I was also getting a good power draw when I turned my lights on and my signals would stop working properly but I think this is my problem I will have to try it Friday and see might try tomorrow before work. Any other advice would be appreciated cause I really hate electrical.
