78/79 Tilt Column Wiring

Hi, figured I'd come over here from 67-72 to ask this question.

I'm putting a 79 tilt into my 67. I have the 67 wiring all figured out but I'm not sure of the original wiring placement on the 79 column.
The column has cruise control that I plan on using at some point and I think that is what is throwing me off some. It has the curved connector with wires as follows:

First row;
Yellow with blue dots
White with red trapezoids
Green with red stripe
Orange with blue stripe
Blue
Green

Second row;
Blue with red stripe
Dark Blue
White with blue stripe
Green with white stripe

Does anyone know where each of these wires goes or what it operates?
Also, I did do a search and found some info but nothing for a cruise tilt column.
Thanks!

Larry

The wiring and harness is the same as the Non-Tilt harness

The difference is "The Horn circuit changes"

The Normal horn circuit becomes the cruise operation through the brain box attached to the inside firewall.
Then the horn through the cruise control circuitry operates with a relay, this too is behind the cluster attached to the dash brace.

The main difference to you is the hazard lights which are in the column.

Do a search on this forum for *Steering column wiring*
or Steering column swap.

I'll be looking for you too.

Do you have the cruise control brain box & wiring Harnesses?

There is one for the brakes too.

Thanks Dennis!

Yikes, I'm not sure what I have.
I don't have the brain box from the truck but I do have one from an early 80's Mustang (the whole cruise setup). I was looking at that earlier and I don't think it will work for me.

I just took apart the button area and I see what you mean. Both the yellow wire and the dark blue wire go to the cruise switches and the yellow goes to the horn too. It had me confused but the box under the dash thing makes sense.

If I do get the correct box (or the Mustang one is the same), will I be able to get that to work in an older truck? It doesn't need an ECM or computer, right?

The only thing I can find in the searches is the one for the non-cruise model. I found one doing a web search for a Bronco swap but the guy said he sent it to the electrical shop!

If you are *going to * cruise, I have the complete list of the things that you need to make it work.

In the meantime, Here is the wiring schematic to show you how it is wired on a 78/79.

Thanks!

It's hard to read but I get the idea.
I do want to go with the cruise and I want to use those steering wheel buttons. But if I have to go with an aftermarket unit I will.
Here's what I have for wiring on the column:

And here's what came with the Mustang cruise. The number on the box is E0AF 0D844 if that means anything.

I could really use that list if you have it available.
Thanks for the help!

Is that "cruise control shutoff switch" the vacuum release valve?

Actually he should already have this.

The brake switch on a NON-Cruise truck has a switch in a bracket on the side of the brake pedal. This FORMER brake light switch becomes the Cruise shut off switch.

Now, There is also a Metal Brake switch that attaches to the push rod & nub on the pedal >> for the Brake Booster.
It looks like I forgot to mention it.

Would you like to see a photo of most of the underdash stuff?

I should have a spare set in the garage I can photograph for you.

Btw, I appreciate the fact that yuo posted the right size photos for attaching.
A lot of people don't seem to know how to resize them to 500 x 350 for attaching.

Thanks.

Thanks Dennis!
Underdash pics would be great. Then I will know what to look for at the junkyard.
The only real problem I see is the brand new booster I just put on the truck. I wonder if it will work. I'll have to call the manufacturer and see.

Oh, and thanks for the emailed schematics. I can see them much better.

No Larry, You can look it up yourself right here.

I don't have Underdash photos , but I can take a picture of all the parts THAT GO under the dash.
They are laying around loose.

78/79 Tilt Column Wiring

Ok, first thanks for the help!

I've been gathering parts and I believe I have a system worked out. I could not find a 78/79 donor for cruise control. So I took a system out of an 85. So, what I will have when done is a 79 tilt column in my 67 with 85 cruise control.

After pouring over many schematics and cutting apart an 85 wiring harness, I think it will work just fine. I had to use the 85 button pad as it has the resume button. That fits perfectly in the 79 steering wheel. While at first look the 67, 79, and 85 circuits look vastly different, they are not. As a matter of fact, after you whittle down all the circuits it's surprisingly simple. Here's a link to a diagram I made up:
http://www.larryscars.com/wiring.jpg

I can see no reason this would not work. Unfortunately, it will be some time before I can test it!
