I need to program my egr out so I don't get codes for it. I'm told I need to buy a tuner, but I don't want to do anything else with it. What's the cheapest way I can modify the computer to forget about the egr?
Depends on what strategy you too. I have an old strategy it doesn't set a CEL with the EGR delete

Josh, is this for your 2006 MY? How do you go about getting an "old strategy" on an 06 MY? I didn't know we had that choice when reflashing. My 2005 has always thrown a CEL, ever since the egr quit flowing crud into the intake. SCT tuner took care of that, though...
The common tuner to turn off EGR is the SCT, because you have many custom tune writer to choose from. The other benifit to buying your own SCT is, if you need to have the truck worked on by a shop/dealer, you can return back to stock tune. A SCT X3 with custom tunes range from $425-$429 with 3 to 11+ custom tunes included in the price. Another cheaper option is to buy a used SCT device, be sure it's unlocked and has unlocks left. Here is a post on what to look for when buying a used SCT device.
The cheapest option would be to "borrow" or buy a PHP gryphon ECM tuner. If you "borrow", you deposit $250 and pay $150 for the EGR/tune. After you tune your PCM, you return the Gryphon and get your deposit back. The Gryphon can also be used to "roll back" the PCM strategy to a preferred stock program.

My truck was last dealer flashed January 2007. Pretty sure all flashes released from February 2007 to late 2009 are guaranteed to set a CEL for an EGR delete.
My results aren't scientific by any means but out of curiosity I tried over 3000 miles stock with an EGR delete and never set a CEL.
I still use a tune 95% of the time.
For those wanting to run stock and remove a CEL an SCT on Trans Only is the best way IMHO
