Okay another question regarding my newest truck..........ive had several trucks with PTO winches, and with a manual tranny i know you can winch while the T-case is in either Neutral or 4wd, but the handwritten instructions that came with my 76 Highboy( 390, C6, 205) only mention winching with T Case in Neutral with transmission in Reverse to power out cable, or Drive to spool in cable. I realize that the winch and driven wheels wont operate at the same speed, so slack and shock loads as cable catches up to wheels are an issue, but is there a problem with winching while t case is in 4hi or 4lo regarding damaging components? for that matter, are the gears in the 205 case that engage with the driven gear inside the PTO drive when you pull the inside the cab push/pull cable control actually driven in various positions? i.e, 4L-N-2H-4H.......the PTO drive is a Chelsea if that matters........Thanks!
I've never used a PTO winch with an automatic tranny, only with a manual tranny, I believe it was either a Chelsea or Ramsey unit, the transfer case had to be in neutral and the PTO gear engaged, you used the transmission gears to operate the winch.... 1st gear for a slow pull, 4th gear for a fast pull, and reverse for winching out and/or downhill.
When i had them on two old Internationals, a Scout 80 and a 1200 P/u, you were able to winch and drive simultaneously......sure it was a pain in the ***, since wheelspeed and winch speed werent matching. i only did it a couple times, for short distances to get unstuck from snow, but again these were manual tranny's. i will have to experiment.......Got my new replacement winch cable, 250' of 3/8" cable, just need a good anchor and some time when its not so damned hot here
Mine is driven off the T-case........in my particular case it would have to be, since my highboy has a C6 auto! I recently saw an article or ad that showed the same Koenig winch that i have, a model 524 on a Ford F700! im still not sure what capacity the winch is, but its a lot bigger than the typical Koenig or Ramsey pickup PTO winch
some NEW modern automatics have a provision for a PTO, and big truck A/T's like Allison Auto's have had PTO's, but im pretty certain that NONE of the 60's to 80's pickups had a PTO provision on the actual A/T........C4, C6, Turbo 350, Turbo 400, 727 Torqueflight, none of them had a power output other than out the back via the driveshaft..........
