So, just under 12k miles and a little over a year old. Usually have a water tight tonneau on the truck. Just went camping so the cover was off. When I was in pulling my 5th hitch yesterday, I noticed a few spots where rust was coming up from the Ford toughbed liner. Anyone else have this happen?
I realize it's just what I can see looking at a picture on my screen, but that looks like something sitting in the bed had some rust wash off in the rain and pool in the depressions in the bed, NOT that it's coming up through the bed...
Looks like you had something metal in your bed and it got wet. I have 2 trucks with spray in liners ,one from ford, and i have had that happen when i left some tools in the bed of the truck. I dont think its rust coming thru the liner
Had the exact same thing happen with a LineX liner on my F150. Took it to LineX twice and they couldn't figure out what happened. It wasn't me putting metal in the bed, it was just some imperfection in the process.
Most fifth wheel hitches have parts that rust, even with a cover, humidity can cause rust. Do you have a metal tonneau. When I had my roll n lock it would drain rust colored water out of the bottom even though the cover itself was aluminum. The front box that held it was metal and the inside rusted. I have had three trucks with spray in liners and never seen one rust from underneath it. Unless the spray on liner has a hole in it or damage to it, I can't see that being the cause.
Perhaps more pictures would help. Certainly doesn't seem to be a common issue. You may be the first with this problem.
I agree with most of the others, I don't think that has anything to do with the bedliner. Can you pressure wash it and take more pics?
Nope, nothing to do with the liner. It's leaching from underneath. Will be cleaning and seeing how long it takes to return. It's like a crust that is forming that can be broken up into powder.
This deal has me wondering. Does ford paint the bed before applying the bedliner? This would be the situation with an aftermarket bedliner as the bed would come painted from Ford. However, since they are doing it in house, do they skip the paint and just spray the liner instead? If so, some thin spots combined with water sitting in the low spots that have rust would seem to explain it.
