This is the tailgate style I was thinking about for my F-150. I couldn't find a pic of this style on a full-size, but if I understand Sidewinders post correctly, this style would be an 80-86 tailgate when referring to full-size trucks?
I suppose since the latches are different, then so are the hinges? I don't mind cutting and welding, but how much difference are we talking? Differences in latch mechanism only, or is the actual mounting location different too?

Yes that would be the 80-86. The latches would need to be changed. However, another thing I was thinking of was if just the striker on the bed could be changed.
If the rain lets up when I get home I'll snap a few pictures of the older tailgate next to mine to show you the difference.
