what's behind there?

I was thinking about taking the metal tailgate cover off my tailgate. However, I don't know if there are holes behind or if it's just held on by 3M body tape. Has anyone done this mod?

Most of the later ones (92 & up) have holes with plastic clips. I would imagine they all do but I'm not sure.

Yeah, It looks bad with it off. If you decide to go that route and get a different smooth tailgate, don't throw that aluminum panel away. Those are not exactly easy to find in good shape.

His truck being 2/4wd has about as much to do with that XLT package trim, as the price of tea in China.

XL/XLT is a trim package, regardless of drivetrain.

Although, Spacegrass does have a point; Find someone with the XL style tailgate in the same color and swap out. Takes 30 seconds to do the swap.

Thanks guys.
Maybe I can be careful enough getting it off to sell it. Then, use the money to get the tailgate patched and prepped for paint.

What years had the raised FORD lettering stamped into the tailgate itself? I want one of those.

My 91 Ranger had that stupid aluminum panel, but when I took it off it was just the older tailgate with raised letters, that Ford had punched holes into so that panel could cover it up.

I know some 86-down did. An 80-86 tailgate can be adapted, however you will need to change the latch mechanism. I've got one in my garage off an 84 I've been meaning to convert over some day for my 92.

1987-1991 had the raised FORD letters.

1980-1986 had the recede area with embossed FORD letters.

Spacegrass, are you trying to troll this guy or something? 1980-86 tailgate WILL work, but ONLY after a lot of PITA work to swap the latches, etc (Which are completely different btw.)

But 1987-1996 tailgate all interchange with 0 issues.

Wow. Well, I was trying to help, not trolling.
I'm staring at one of these tailgates right now. As I was saying, I have a tailgate off of a 1984. I know the latches are different, as I told him. I was planning on doing the swap myself and shared the information I have.

FYI as well, I've never had an xl to be fair, I have had two 92 4x4 customs (pre xl) both with the aluminum plate. I have had a 94 xlt 2wd without the aluminum insert. Just going off my knowledge.

And you are right, I forgot the 87-91s also had the stamped letters.

Again my apologies I guess. I was simply trying to help.

I have a 1992 Custom with said Aluminum plate, but it was just more plentiful on the XLT trucks.

As for helping, I wasn't referring to you ACTUALLY helping, that much, is extremely appreciated.

I was meaning about suggesting the pre-1987 tailgate.

Drivetrain is completely independent of what trucks got the XLT style tailgate.

Completely understood now, thanks and sorry for the misunderstanding =)

Sorry for the hijack, and good luck with whatever you choose to do with the tailgate.
