I'm not the norm here but take it for what it's worth.
I have a 07 8200 lb gvw F150, extended cab with a 8' box. It's got the 5.4L engine and 4.10 gears and it's a 4x2.
90% of my driving is around town at 35-45 mph, the rest is highway and I drive around 63 mph (where the tach is showing 2K rpms - seems to be the sweet spot).
For almost 50K miles, I've averaged 15 mpg town and 18.5-19.5 mpg highway. I have gotten as high as 20.3 mpg highway out of it, just depends on the gas and conditions.
My mods are simple: came with alloy rims instead of the steel rims. I added a tonneau cover to the bed. Everything else is as pretty much as purchased used in 2009 with 20K on the odometer.
I did change the plugs at 42K to Champions to get rid of the 2 piece plugs otherwise it's just normal maintenance items.
My driving is basically no jack-rabbit starts or hard braking, I keep up with traffic and drive sensibly.
For a vehicle this size and weight, I'm happy with what I get for mileage.

When I got my S10 truck new in '99, I did not have any kids and only planned to have a few. Over the years, it would be no exaggeration that I have filled the back of my truck hundreds of times with everything from furniture purchased on CR, to dirt, to brush, blocks, bee hives, etc. I really USE the bed of my truck. The S10 4 cyl / 5 speed has worked hard for me and I have pushed it to the beyond its limits many times. A few times, I worried I was going to break the axle or something else. Only towed a small trailer a few times. I have a V10 Excursion I can tow with...
The difference today is that I have 7 children. I don't want to give up the truck function but need more room and the small 4 doors such as the Colorado or Frontier have a even smaller bed. I can put 4 kids in mine now but 3 of those seats are not considered safe. All of my kids are 13yrs old and under. Over the last few years the need for the additional seating in a 2nd vehicle has increased and it is continuing to increase.
Additionally, I have always wanted a F150 and have always liked the Supercrew. I would consider a supercab but it seems that the extra leg room and space for childrens car seats will be helpful.

No problem. Here is my thread when I got mine. If you get one talk the dealer into doing the maint for you. Doesn't cost them much, most of the time they can fit it into their down time. Give them a few days to do it! But it saves you the time and or a big expense. Plugs for sure make them do them before you buy it.

Thanks for the reply. I am going to read through your whole post but yours is virtually the same as I am wanting. White with a budget of 12k or under and hopefully under or really close to 100k miles. To me this is the sweet spot. Still can be a really nice truck in good condition and at a price that will not lose it value much from year to year.
I used to buy new or close to new vehicles but with my family and running on a no-debt budget, it really forces me to not spend too much...
