I have a 98 f150 factory alarm, the truck started showing symptoms of a bad starter a month ago. The truck would crank over very slowly and I had to turn the key off and on about 20 times.
Eventually I just began using a screwdriver to start it acrossed the two posts on the cylinoid, one day i saw when doing this that the positive post old the starter was glowing red and smoking slightly i stopped.
I purchased and tested a brand new starter installed it, now all i get is a series of clicks coming from the cylinoid on the fire wall, replaced the cylinoid and it still does it.
All wires and connections are good, When I use a screw driver on the cylinoid now i hear the starter arm pop out, however the motor doesnt turn over.
could this be from the alarm ? i tried starting it in nuetral also.
after further investigation, i attempted to start the truck while moving the key up and down the starter would sometimes click once or sometimes click over and over, the starter began to smoke so i stopped messing with it.
I doubt the alarm has anything to do with it as you say the starter drive solenoid engages but doesn't turn. If your battery and cables are good maybe the starter solenoid is burnt internally and not allowing current through. You may need a test light or volt/ohm meter to test.

Aside from possible wrong connections being made when you installed the new starter, maybe something is seized and keeping the engine from turning over. Check all the pulley's and try barring the engine over manually.
