Man, I've been away from the forum for so long that I forgot my password!!!
Finally got it and need to ask if there is any way to tighten the tension on the two rear view mirrors on either side of my '91 Ranger. They've become so loose that just touching them in walking by in my way-too-crowded garage bumps them out of proper focus. I've looked for some hidden set screw, or other tension device but found none.
So is there a hidden set screw or something I can tighten?
Or if not, what do you guys use to tighten the mirrors up so they stay in place but can be adjusted if necessary? There must be some secret to this.
Those mirrors are garbage, once they get that bad there is no saving them.
Go to a wrecking yard and get the swing away towing mirrors off another Ranger of similar vintage, just add 2 screws for the bottom mount.
Look at ebay or go to an aftermarket place that sells the replacement mirrors. I put power mirrors on mine they were about $40-45 each. Also L&M truck have replacement mirrors, but the stock ones even on ebay may be no better than what you currently have if they are used.
I've had some success with adding low force locktite to the joint. I have also used superglue but that made the joint immovable. the attaching mechanism is under the mirror glass so you have to break or otherwise remove the mirror glass to tighten it (ask me how I know this) There are not expensive replacements out there online or at auto parts stores, bought some, got myself the swing-aways off a junker anyways.
I was thinking about something along the lines of Locktite and I appreciate the confirmation from Piotrsko to at least give it a try. Let's see how big a mess I can make now!
