I have an 86 f150 4x4 5.0 AOD...am I correct that this motor is going to have the E6 heads that everybody says are so horrible? Would a swap to GT40s make enough difference to make the swap? This thing really has no power and Im just looking for a bit more. Thanks in advance.
If I knew it had the E7 "truck" heads on it I wouldnt worry too much about it, but i have heard alot of bad about the E6 heads.
Its 3.50 geared, and I plan on a 4.10 or lower swap at some point in the future, just not wanting to go there right now, just because of the cost.
Its a daily driver, back and forth to work sometimes pick up fat chicks and hit a mud hole that kind of thing.

An 86 F150 with a 302 has EFI. The 302's in 86 (at least my 86 302) has E7TE heads, which are the good heads from what I have read. I did a light porting job and added long tube headers and the truck runs great. However, the stock Speed Density 86 EFI system is very limited to what sort of modifications you can do. It measures Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) and I think Air temperature as well as O2 levels to control fuel air ratio. THe stock Speed Density computer is not setup to add much modification. I think the stock 86 302 came with 190hp and somewhere around 190-200 lb ft of torque. I believe with my port job and dual h-pipe 2.25" exhaust my truck runs better than stock, but I don't think I would change much of anything else.
One other option is to do the MAF upgrade, at which point you can start heavy head mods and cam swaps. You get Sequential port injection when you upgrade to MAF, and the computer (from a mustang) can compensate more for your upgrades. I have the MAF meter, pins for the harness and the excel document telling me how to do it, but I still need a speed sensor and the air cleaner assembly from a later model MAF truck. I've had other priorities.
You are a victim of a little engine in a big heavy truck. With the AOD you probably get good fuel mileage and for what you use it for, is probably what you need to save a little money on fuel.
But if you have the need for speed, you will need something lighter like a mustang with the same engine in it, or a bigger engine in your heavier truck. You will have to make the decision, but a truck with a larger engine is going to be your easiest solution and give you the most bang for your buck as far as some get-up and go, but it will sacrifice your fuel economy.
Im not looking for race car speed, I just wanna keep up with traffic lol...Ive got a 99 Cobra if I get the go fast bug. I had a 90 f150 with the 300 6cyl, and I loved it! It had plenty of power or as much as I expected out of a big heavy truck. But this 5.0 is just pitiful. I just built a mild 351w for another project (maybe ranger) but I hate to swap because this truck only has 130k miles.
Have you pulled the codes? Possibly the computer isn't advancing the ignition timing for some reason, or maybe something else is wrong that the computer can help you with.
My 86 302 EFI with 2.74 gears and a C6 isn't going to win any races from a dig. However, once I get the rpm's going on that little 302 the truck really scoots down the highway. I can cruise 75 mph all day long and mash the gas and have plenty of power well past burying the speedo. My 302 loves anything over 3000 rpms but hates anything below that.
I'm surprised your '86 is not fast enough. My '85 4x2 with 4sd manual was really quick with the original engine and 3.00 diff. I had no problem pulling my 17' ski boat out of any ramp. I'd do a compression check and check your timing chain and your cooling system.
The stock heads on the truck 302 had smaller ports & valves for better low end torque and most of 'em run pretty good even with the AOD. They're not going to win any races but they should do good enough for a daily driver even with the 4X4.
I always hate to read someones thread with a problem and never hear what the solution was so i decided to resurrect this one to give my solution......and I feel like a dummy! After checking everything I knew to check (timing chain, timing, six litre tuneup, etc etc) I heard about the wire tie on the gas pedal mod. 2 wire ties later and it has the power I thought it should!!! Its definitely not a race car, but it is a whole different truck now. So again im a dummy
