Comparing the two, I have come up with this so far:
Edge Insight CTS is $399. The EGT gauge for it is an additional $139. Total comes to $528. Nice unit, easy to use. Looks like plug and play to me, and I do like that.
Dashboss app is 169.95. The EGT probe for it is $99. You would also need something like a IPOD Touch to make it work and you can get them remanufactured like new with 1 year warranty from Apple for $129 to $149, depending on its build date. (You would need version 4.3 or better) Total comes to $417. You also get an IPOD to play with when not hooked up to the truck. Also, the Dashboss doesn't require wires from OBT2 port to the device as it is bluetooth connected.
Let me see, $528 - $417 = $111 savings for the Dashboss investment.
Is there any other benefit to the Edge Insight that I am missing here? I think I'm leaning toward the Dashboss. Please let me know if I should reconsider.
Cant argue with that, I love my insight, but it is expensive. And if you want to add a pressure gauge its gonna cost you another 300 bucks, although to install the pressure gauge setup requires no cutting into the factory harness for a power supply, it simply connects to the Edge Insight through a daisy chain style connector and you can add another EGT probe or a back up camera all of which connect in the same fashion. I am not sure how many things you can add, the universal input cable you need for the pressure sensor to work allows for adding 2 sensors so the second sensor will only cost like 150 bucks instead of the 300 for the original.
I think the fuel pressure sensor with Dashboss was like an additional $30, if I recall my conversation with the rep. He said he was in the process of getting a video up where you can see the process of installing the fuel pressure monitor.
The backup camera is something I really like on the Insight as I could use it to hook up my fifth wheel hitch, but the Dashboss rep said that I could get an Apple camera that will comunicate wirelessly with an IPOD. It would be a separate app to use with the IPOD so would have nothing to do with the Dashboss. Something I could always add at a later date.
I do like both options but so far I think the Dashboss seems like a better setup, for me anyhow... Unless there's something I'm missing.
Do they make a nice mount for the dashboss device like the Insight has?
Exactly! Where are you going to mount an Ipad. Leaving it in view in the truck will be inviting a break-in, so you're going to be stashing it everytime you park somewhere.
Dashboss has a mount that sits on the dash called a "roadster". Call the Dashboss guys and check it out. The guy I talked to (Ken) thought it was pretty cool. It has sticky stuff on the bottom to hold to the dash, but doesn't leave any adhesive or residue on the dash. He said that if the sticky stuff stops working to just wash with soap and water and it will stick again. The IPOD, or Iphone could be taken out of the holder and used or stored as usual, belt clip, pocket etc. He said the actual dashboss app device, down at the OBT2 port, could be mounted anywhere, i.e. under the bottom of the dash etc with velcro. It is very small and light and easy to hide. No wires, except from OBT2 and app device, just bluetooth signal.
I think he said that they also have a windshield mount available as well, but Ken thought this one is pretty cool. Oh yeah, he also said that it is adjustable, so you can stick it on a surface on the dash that isn't level and simply adjust the IPOD/IPHONE holder to level.
Oh and Bill, I'm pretty sure the "roadster" (holder) I am talking about here wont hold an IPAD (too heavy I think). You would have to call Dashboss and ask them how to mount that as I don't plan on buying an IPAD. The holder I'm talking about holds an IPOD or IPHONE.
Mounting a iOS device is a not a big issue, there are thousands of aftermarket mounts. Unlike Edge devices, your limited to just a few.
I'm working on downloading the video for DashBoss, the file is too big for yahoo email. I only give the basics of what is needed for the FP and EGT. I do explain the FP adapters available, FP locations, and how to wire. I give info on EGT probe install and wiring using the DashBoss EGT amp. I'm not sure how much of the video Ken is gonna edit.
Another plus for DashBoss is the Data log feature that can be displayed as a graph or send it to yourself in a email, so it comes out in a CSV file.
Rich, are you the "Ford guy" that Ken told me about, making a how to video for installing fuel pressure? If so, thanks. I'll be using that video soon, I hope.
Addressing: Apple Sucks: I am a developer and had the same feeling as Apple can sometimes make it hard to work with their process. I thought I would never own an Apple device and preached against them.
But my truck is more important than my grudge. So I bought an Ipad only to run Dashboss. I have to admit the longer I have it the more uses I find for it.
Mounts: I recommend - Newegg.com - The Joy Factory MMA106 Valet Seat Bolt Mount w/ MagConnect Technology It stores easy when not in use. There are cheaper seat bolt mounts but when I researched them they seem to wopple around a lot. There is also a $700 seat bolt mount made for law enforcement and military use...but who can spend that?
Using Ipad: I like it better than a phone - just because it is bigger and easier for my eyes to see at a glance.
Dashboss: I can bring it (Ipad) into the office, plug it into my computer and look at the charts (logs) to see what is going on while driving.
I could not be happier with my purchase.
I bought the CS off Amazon for $273 and am very happy with it. I bought both the CTS and CS to try and found the small size and push buttons on the CS worked best for me. My back up camera is tied to the Pioneer in dash so that wasn't an issue, besides the screen is too small even on the CTS. I use AE for troubleshooting.
For any of you that have the later trucks with the driver's glove box, your i-Pod or i-phone should fit in there nicely. That's where I stick my Droid and it's easy to see and doesn't move. Since it's my phone I always take it with me, but I could switch it off and just close the glove door and it's out of sight...
My Wife spent a majority of her career in Network, Server and PC support -- she hated supporting the mixed environments with Apples mixed in: easy on the end-user, living hell for the support folk. I would have my B_lls cut off and fed to me if I brought an Apple anything home...
