In my new-to-me truck the OD indicator light does not come on. I can push the button and feel the shift out of overdrive and when I push it again I can feel the shift back in. The light doesn't flash or anything, just always off.
Do the lights go bad? I know if it blinks it can indicate trans problems but I haven't found any instances in the threads where the light isn't functioning.
Thanks
Take the plastic cover off of the steering column. Inspect the wires where they enter the shift handle. Either repair the broken wire or replace the shift handle.

Will do that after work today and let you know what I find. Thanks
very common for the 2 wires to break just at the base of where shifter attaches.... I'm quite surprised that yours still sounds like it's functioning... I've never heard of just the light going bad (on end of shifter) either.
I will edit this with pics if necessary. I found one wire had worn through the insulation (not broken) and there was bare copper showing. I soldered it back together, used a little hot glue to seal, checked the other wires... Still no light so a new shift handle may be in order
The wires are more than likely good. If the light is out then it is just the switch itself that has gone bad....but just enough that the light doesn't work. Since your tranny shifts in and out of OD when you hit the button tells me that is the only issue... the light.
You can get a new switch for about $20 to $25 from the dealer. Look on the back side of the shifter lever about 1/2 inch from the end. You will see a slight notch to the end cap that you can use to pop it off. Then the switch just slides right out.
3 pin that plugs into the end of the shifter. Slide in new switch, pop the cap back on and away you go.
Thanks for the switch!
Unfortunately installed it and still no light but switch still works, so I'm assuming next step is to replace the lever?
Unless the PO snipped the wire somewhere else? I noticed there is no chimes in the truck so he must've done something.
Thought about tracking him down to see what he has done to the truck but that seems like an invasion of privacy.
You are just contacting him for truck info. Not like you are asking him for money.
If you contact him...go for it.
Also... When you have the switch out, take a look at the "barrels" where the pins from the switch go into. If they look a little "spread", using something like a dental pick to close them up a little. This will ensure a good contact to the switch. Although if that was the issue the switch wouldn't work at all.

I'll pop that off and take a look. I didn't know if there was a wire for just the indicator or if it was for the whole switch

Yeah that is a little odd. There are only three wires to the switch and easy enough to see them under the cover, but I don't think one is just for the light.... is it?
hopefully someone else can give you more info. Would hate to have you spend the $$ for a whole stalk and the problem still exists.
Just a thought, but have you by chance checked for trouble codes? I don't know where you purchased the truck, but it wouldn't surprise me if some used car dealer saw the light flashing and did something/cut something to make it stop so he could get it sold. I hate to be so cynical, but unfortunately there are people out there who would do something like that.

One wire is +12v, one is the switch, and one is the light.
