Keeping Cool Towing Uphill

Noticing that long uphill grades while towing the 5th wheel, sometimes (not always) the idiot guage climbs and even brings on the check guage light. Not quite going into the overheat area and when you reach the summit and let off the temp quickly returns to normal.
I wonder if you drop off the throttle when the temp start to climb and drop to 3rd and then just keep the rpms around 2500 or so would drop the temp and would this be a safe method of keeping things from getting hot?
My degas bottle is not puking and I have new coolers along with gaskets and ARP studs. And, yes I'm going to get a Scanguage II.

I know you said it but you need to get the scangauge to read your temps. The stock gauges are junk.

Yes, you're thinking right. When you get in a bind on hill, letting the gears do the work is a good idea. Higher RPM's will be moving more coolant through the water pump also. The cooling fan should pick up speed and compensate for the slower mph air coming through the radiator.

Sound like your head studs are earning their keep.
