Love a flathead, wish mine wasn't already long gone when I got my 53. I have a war replacement block but its a 59AB sitting on my engine stand collecting dust waiting for me to get a Model A body some day. Gotta finish this truck first!
yeah, set screw for a bubba style mechanical advance/vacuum dist. Yes, Navarro heads.
its a 276 with a H&h stage 3 kit. scat 4" crank, rods, ross pistons. The block was .060 over to begin with. we thought about going another 20 but one cylinder probably needed a deeper bore anyway to make us happier with some stitching and not need a sleeve. Over all the block has about 18 pins in it but no sleeves. Mostly mac supplied valve train except the chevy stainless valves. The lifters had to have .002 taken off of them because the screws were so tight that when adjusted the lifters were starting to distort and hang up in the bore. We think we ... well Dave is getting his next order, for a Zephyr, from red's. Nothing special about rings and bearings. I have a Navarro regular dual to go on top with a couple of 97's but that will wait for 500 miles or so. yep, the load-o-matic will go back on for break in. what else, oh yeah the machinist said he learned so much from this block that he has agreed to fix my original block now. he said he hasn't had the luxury of working on many 8ba's . mostly earlier stuff.
I'll get some video up as this build progresses. wound up going with a regrind of a 77b for the cam. I kept my eab cam and subbed an 8rt for the regrind. I wanted to use the eab because this is in front of a ford-o-matic but Dave the machinist really swears i will love this cam. My next build will be much simpler and much cheaper. I probably doubled my budget. I ain't proud but I've put in enough hours lately so that my CFO of 28 years is letting me get away with it, well so far.
I didn't take all the good advice I got here, but you can bet I gave all of it a lot of thought. so Thanks fellas. I'm not sure i'd have had the patience if i couldn't read everyone else's stories. The eab heads and crank from my donor have already found homes. Gotta love the Dallas efv8 club.
3 5/16 bore. the balancer is off I think another fellows 271 hemi which is on the bench beside my 8ba, which was rebuilt and getting a t5 fitted to it.
I'm pretty sure he said 271. I should have got pictures of that too but i only had eyes for my flathead. I did check out the piston tops. elaborate things with half domes and valve pockets.
