Don't Forget ...the HP might be only 300-400 but the Torque will be around 700 or more lbs-ft. ..That is what bakes the transmission ...NOT the HP...Heat is the enemy of the Tranny ....

You should see the price tags on some of the more "exotic" turbos that are being discussed. Some to the tune of about $2500 a pop, plus the plumbing and mount kit. Too rich for my blood....

I couldn't agree more. I need my truck to be reliable so I modify it with that in mind. I think it is really cool to see someone pushing the 1,000HP limits with a diesel truck, but that's not what my truck is for. For me, it is the go-to reliable means of getting work done. Anything that compromises that had better be a HUGE improvement of something that is a serious deficiency of the stock design.

I agree on reliability but I also want something with a kick. And your 460 would do dually burnouts? Mine would barely do peg leg SRW burnouts. I guess that's the difference between 3.55s and 4.56s lol

Should I use head studs or just replace my bolts? I think it may have a cracked head or blown head gasket so its all coming apart

That's how I got you had 4.56s...

Im REALLY liking the sound of slamming a ZF5 in there. It gets my heart pumping just thinking about it! And honestly, Itd almost be as much work and money to do that than upgrade my 200,000 mile autoturd

If you can find a good parts source to get all the little pieces from, it really isn't a bad swap. There are quite a few guys on here that have done the swap that can give you a complete play-by-play and parts list. The absolute best is to have a diesel ZF5 parts truck to rob parts and pieces from, but if you don't have that, you can still gather the parts separately.

Iv swapped a ZF into my old 460 and it was amazingly straight forward. I had my uncle GIVE me a truck, told me take what I need and give the rest back lol. He doesn't have a diesel parts truck

I could "maybe" scrape up the parts but a parts truck would be a dream. I got this crazy idea thatd work: buy a ZF and get a parts truck with a 460 and manual tranny, even without a running gear at all. All the other parts interchange! The only thing that's different is the bellhousing

That would work for most of the parts, but there are still a few diesel specific parts that would be nice to have for the swap (the manual PCM in particular). The swap can be done without changing the PCM, but the best way is to get the PCM from a manual diesel truck and swap it over as well. There are some minor differences in the way the fueling is controlled that improve the drivability of the truck if you have the manual PCM.

But yeah, good luck. These trucks are getting harder to find, especially if they're 5 speeds.

Could you not make an Allison Fit ? or the later 6 speed transmissions ? Or are they too expensive ? I have no idea that is why I ask...

The 6 speed can be (and has been) done but it takes some modifications to the floor pan because it is taller than the 5 speed. As for the Allison, I don't know. I would imagine that you could work it out to put any transmission behind it that International offered behind the T444E but you might have to make your own transmission cross member and if it were an auto, the PCM interface could be a little tricky.

I was honestly driving around today when it hit me like a speeding bullet!

Allison

Nuff said. Destroked makes an adapter plate to bolt an Allison right up to a 7.3. Only thing is, Ill prolly spend as much on that darn adapter as the tranny itself...

Allisons are "fairly" easy to come by. They've been around since before 01. They had em behind the Chevy 8.1 so theyre at least good til 550 ft lbs

Im starting to see a problem though... I cant find a stand-alone controller for it. Destroked has one where you can control shift points, shift firmness, and TC lock up but its $1600!!

I browsed around on the interweb and BTS comes up quite a bit. A LOT of guys have awesome success stories with him, including many on here! I wouldn't mind sending my E4OD off to be bulletproofed and warrantied but... $4000+
