5-speed Questions
My questions are:
(1) can i use the VIN number to identify the transmission? Any other way?
(2) can the condition of this transmission be determined without complete disassembly of the transmission?
(3) if this transmission needs a rebuild, can a guy with a press in his garage do it, or are many special tools needed?
(4)where would i find rebuild parts and info for this job?
(5) any 5-speed experts in central florida?
Thanks in advance for your advice.....jack

I have a Ford manual that covers both. A few Ford factory tools are offered for set-up and such, but if you have a press and a gear removing press-plate you should be a ble to do what you need to do. A depth micrometer is needed to set the preload on the input bearing if you disturb that. A few special Rotunda tools are recommended but many rebuild these with common tools.
A company like "drive-train" or similar will have everything you need for a rebuild.
To disassemble the "top cover" is NOT recommended unless you know what ur doing and is probably never necessary.
They suffer from lack of lubrication because of being run low on fluid (ATF) because of leakage of the rubber seals on the top cover shift rail plugs. There is a lot written about these trannies and I'm sure you'll get up to speed if you take the top cover off and look inside.
A "94" should have newer style syncro rings, but be aware of the many types that were used along with the option of the syncro reverse that came out in about 93 or so. You can't mix the syncro's from each series so be watchful and ask whoever supplies you to give you what YOU need.
Have fun. It's a usable medium weight tranny, and overdrive ..just keep fluid in it...hope that last guy didn't let it run dry..and froze it up..I've seen it happen...( If I were running one I would keep a rebuilt spare)..
I used to have all of the ford dealer offered tools for rebuilding these but have gotten out of that since I became to old to deal with that "pull-the-tranny-to-change-the-slave" concept. The last slave I found with a Ford part# on it came from Asia. I'm done with that..
Best wishes...

Mazda Transmission Disassembly Under Field Conditions
(the writer of this field dis-assembly article is in PA and probably can rebuild you one of these at a very reasonable price and ship it to you. He is reliable) To contact him you can do this thru that other website where the article is posted. He is a tech adviser over there..
