Carburetor

So I am looking for a one barrel replacement for my 300 6 f100. Does edelbrock make single barrel carbs that have an electric choke and would go on my 300? I know Holley does but I have heard that they are touchy and need a lot of tuning...
I bought a rebuild kit for my carter but that intimidates the heck outta me and i know for a fact this carburetor has been rebuilt before AT LEAST once, and my truck is running like crap.

Replacement stock carter carb still runs $209 at oreilly's , and the electric choke is $75.

Thanks for the help
Craig

I don't know about replacements but I can rebuild it for you if you want to ship the carb and kit to me here in Phoenix, Az. BTW, are you going to keep the engine stock or Hot Rod it a bit? After all, Pontiac had a factory 4BBL. 6 cylinder back in the '60's. Why not a 300?

Well I appreciate the offer, but if it does come down to rebuilding this one, I would like to try it myself to get the whole learning experience..

So if I were to get a 2 or 4 barrel, i would just need to get an intake manifold that has 2 or 4 inlets? Also would that be worse gas mileage? (Although I am getting 9 mpg already)

Get an Offenhauser intake. It's made for a 4V but a 300 will be fine with a 500 cfm 4V carb. 302s came with a 4V so why not a 300... stay easy with the CFMs (even a 390 cfm 2V carb is OK) cuz 300s were designed for torque.

MPGs/power can be a trade off with these rigs. With a 1V, it'll take quite a bit of air/fuel to get the mass moving where as the 2v or 4V will make it relatively easier to build and maintain its speed. Basically, does it require more air and fuel through a 1V than a 2V/4V configuration? Only a specific fuel consumption test can determine that.

9 MPG with a 1V? Mileage should be better than that. Either you've got a lead foot or that's one heavy rig you're driving.

It's not heavy at all, in fact there is no pickup bed right now, i took out the planks and rails because of rust and rot, and even the tailgate is off until I get new hinges on Thursday, that's why I figured it was a carburetor issue with gas mileage and rough idle. And I do not have a lead foot yet

2 X Hio Silver.
Plus all it may need is an ol' fasioned COMPLETE tune up and some TLC. Don't automatically go to the carb. Read your plugs. Make sure no vacuum leaks. Including internally of the brake booster.

I have new plugs and new master cylinder. As far as I can tell there are no vaccuum leaks, the two vaccuum advance lines seem fine, and the line to the transmission is metal so it should be fine.. Not sure what other vaccuum lines there are..

You might want to complete the tune-up. Cap,rotor, wires, points, and condensor. Down at the end of the tranny's metal vacuum tube is a short piece of rubber hose connecting to the vacuum modulator. Check that. If you hear a faint whistle under the dash while the engine is running then the brake booster is bad and that's a vacuum leak.

I just tore the old manifolds off and put new ones on, and while doing so, I popped that tranny vaccuum tube off. When I went to put it back on, it slid on VERY easily, so that may be part of the issue... It would explain why I feel a grinding every now and then when turning at very slow speeds maybe...

Also..I don't have a brake booster?

I just rebuilt my Carter YFA a month or so. I also have the 300 i6 that is completely stock.
I was getting about 9 originally but after a complete rebuild with float and a full tune up I am getting 20-21 MPG. Be sure you have also changed your fuel filter on the pump if you are still running the manual pump.

Hmmm, I may just try to rebuild it then. I already have new plugs and plug wires. I will get new cap and rotor and points and fuel filter. So I got a rebuild kit that has an instruction sheet that says Carter Carburetor - Model YF, Use with 50-563-1. Is this the right one?

On a side note, I lifted up the rear end to put new brake cylinders in and readjust the bumper and found out I have a 350 posi on this truck!!

pick up a new float for it so you can replace during the rebuild.
if you can, let the carb pieces soak in carbsoak over night. it will help clean all the build up.

you will need to find out which carb you have. the kit that fit mine was for use with 50-433-7
there is a different kit for the Carter YF and the YFA. Mine is a YFA with manual choke so yours could be different.
I am sure there are people that know a lot more about these carbs than me. Hopefully they will chime in. If you haven't, you should post in the 300 i6 forums.

All kidding aside, Birdman. I do not know a bunch about the 1 v carbs but I do know one thing. The most obvious difference between the correct and incorrect kits will be two gaskets. 1st being the gasket between the top cover and main body of the carb. 2nd being the gasket between the main body and the throttle plate. Don't open the cellophene of your kit just look in and locate those gaskets. Look at your carb and picture if they will fit.
