Hey guys I'm building a 47 ford 1/2 ton rod. I'm trying to keep the purchasing of large hard parts to a min. I have a 400 big block, 390, 69 360. Sitting a in shed out at the farm. I've just started tearing the truck down. But I don't know a thing about big blocks, but the basics. Lol. Any ways I just want to put a hefty enough amount of power for the cubes. What are your thoughts?

.. Yes, the 400 is basically like a tall deck 351 Cleveland 'small block'... proper pistons (modified 351C pistons) and a mild performance cam can net you a cheap 350-400HP or more depending on the year of the 400... '70-'71 400's have the best flowing stock heads... you end up with something akin to a ' 400" Cleveland '... and it's 80 pounds lighter than a true Ford 'big block'...
cleveland piston have a smaller piston pin. have to install a bushing in the 400 rod to fit the smaller pin. Not a big problem for a decent machine shop. done this with couple of engines. tim meyer pistons are a simpler route for upgrades but either will work. compression up and yes you will upgrade hrspwr double with decent cam. upgrade your cam bearing to tim meyer bearings, great and simple upgrade for street driven engines and performance. I have many photos in my albums and photobucket up my cobrajet headed 400 ford with cleveland pistons if any questions. have a good day.
