I have a 2001 explorer xlt with 5.0 v8. I have installed a class III hitch, brake controller and 7 pin wiring connector. I am going to be towing a 2,000 lb trailer with electric brakes. On top of the trailer will be my 3200 lb 93 mustang(=5200+lbs.) I am not sure of my truck's actual towing capacity but have been told this shouldn't be a problem. Is there anything I need to be worried about in any reguard?.....ie(engine, tranny, sway, etc.) I should mention my truck does have a tranny cooler also. Would appreciate any input (sooner the better!) Thanks
You are running close to what I used to. I pulled my 16' trailer with my Bronco 2 on it with my '99 4x4 XLT, but I only had the SOHC. You have a better engine and a better tranny for towing, so things will be a little easier for you. Here are some suggestions for ya that I found helped me.
1. Never pull in OD
2. get a set of Helwig Helpers for the rear springs(mine are for sale )
3. take the time to "fine tun" your trailer brakes before you take off.
4. Bring a tire repair kit and a spare for your trailer.
5. take a look at the "cushion receivers" (helped out tons as far a vibrations and the "take off jerk")
6. Bring spare bulbs and fuses for your trailer
These are the things that happened or I did over the last year while pulling my trailer and everyone of them helped out. I found out fast that if something can go wrong, it will.
Here is a shot of the "helpers"...
They took all of my sag out and helped alot with cornering.
Here is a pic of my setup...

Yes he does, the 281 W 4.6L EFI didn't come out for the Explorer till the year '02 when the 3rd gen Explorers were produced. In '01 they still had the 302 5.0L EFI.

I didn't realize the 5.0 was kept around until 2001.
Yup, but you could only get it with the AWD model as far as I know (maybe in the AUTO model too). My father had a '01 AWD with the 5.0, but he traded it in for a '03 AWD with the 4.6. I like the 4.6, but the 5.0 just seems quicker. Maybe my imagination though. I don't think you can get a 5.0 in an Explorer after '02, but I maybe wrong. I kind of lost interest in them when they went IRS. You could be right as far as the exact name though, I have heard guys say they have a 4.9 V8 302??? Ford has too many engines to keep track of honestly.
Thanks diesel, but I think I know what kind of engine I have bro. Beside the fact that I've been working on 5.0L's for a while now, even a blonde would know it has a 5.0 because it is says so on the cover plate of the intake, not to mention the engine sticker, owners manual, etc. Just because I'm new to this forum doesn't men I'm new to fords, but thanks anyway bud!
