Can't shift into drive
My son has a 1985 f350 diesel that drove fine yesterday. Well, he went to give me a ride in it today and it will not go into drive. If the truck is not running, it goes through the gears fine [p,r,n,d,2,1]. When he starts it up, it'll go into reverse and that's it. No neutral or drive. I'm thinking some sort of safety mechanism. Can anyone help us with this? Thanks.

While it's sitting there idling, pull the dipstick for the tranny, wipe it off, and then stick it back in and pull it out again and check the oil level. Is it low? Do this with the engine running.
