Confused

Alright well i found a 1981 ford f150 ranger xlt with very very little rust on it and a v6 with some sort of automatic transmission. The guy wants 500 bucks for it. The only problems i see with buying it are the fact that my parents would kick my butt but they would get over it but as for the truck itself the only problem is that the engine wont run. One guy says its the timing chain but the owner and i believe it was something else because the reason it wont start is because someone tried to prime the engine by pouring gas into the carb. Another problem is that the odometer reads 873000km... I dont believe this cause the engines the original and the owner (very trustworthy guy) says that he thinks its only truely around 250000.... is it possible the odo "fast forwarded" somehow and what would the problem be with the engine? it backfired after being "primed" and hasnt run since, i personally believe its just the carb but like i said another guy thinks its the timing chain. One last question. IF i bought this truck for 500 bucks and the trannys rebuilt but the engines not running, would i be able to make my money back or even make a little??

If you can answer these questions ill thank you in advance incase i forget or something.

I don't see how anyone makes do without owning a pickup. I guess people who don't have a pickup know someone who does and they borrow it all the time. Hardley any rust makes it worth the money, and you have a good foundation to build on. I am not positive, we will wait for someone else to chime in, but I think a 302 will drop in place of that v6 if it turns out it's no good.
