Here's a good one that I still cant find an answer for. I just picked up an 93' Explorer for a song and it has all forward gears but when I put it in reverse it wont move. I can give it gas and the motor will rev to converter stall speed and thats it. I have rebuilt many tranny's in my time including the good ole A4LD but I have never seen this happen to a stock trans, except of course when running a trans brake. The tranny engages fine, what I mean is you can feel it engaging when shifting from forward to reverse but it just wont move in reverse! Any thoughts? Thanks for your input.
If that where the case then I should be able to get some over-rev. I am thinking that the forward clutch is hanging up some how. Either way it is looking like a pull job. I am looking really hard at swapping this slushbox out for a 5 speed, seems as this vehicle is gonna be used for some good ol off-roading. Thanks for the thoughts though.
Does that explorer have drum or disc rear brakes? If the brakes are drum it may be a good idea to make sure they were put together right, or make sure nothing is jamming them up. I had this happen on our old fullsize bronco. The guy put both of the primary shoes on one side and both secondary shoes on the other. After releasing the parking brake the truck would go forward but reverse was a pain until the brakes would free up. Took me a couple years until discovered what the problem was. Just an idea before you start tearing into everything.
What ever was causing the problem is free'd up now, along with everything else for that matter. I was performing a converter stall test and tried it in reverse and what ever was causing the problem let loose and now I get nothing but a very nasty gringing sound. Something broke and lodged in one of the planetary assemblys. Thanks for the input all.
