Got truck started after charging batteries so I decided to let it run for a few to re-charge the batteries. Came back about 30 mins later and smelled burning rubber. Popped hood to find belt wrapped around everything and burnt rubber on most of the smooth pulleys. All pulleys free spin except the water pump can't turn it at all. Fan spins with a little resistance, so clutch is good. Now to my questions 1. Will it hurt the truck to start it and move it out of the yard and onto the carport shouldn't take more than a couple of mins (gonna be hard to steer though). And 2. What is a good water pump and should I replace the clutch at the same time? Is there anything else I should change when replacing the water pump?
1) No sir.
2) I just put mine from Riff Raff Diesel on tonight. No on the clutch. I put a new Tstat and added a coolant bypass filter system, flushed the entire block and went to Delo ELC for antifreeze. You obviously will need a belt as well.
My answers are not in the same order you asked the questions...
1) A minute or three should not be a problem.
2) I did not change my fan clutch when my water pump went out at about 185K miles... now at 240K miles and still running the original fan clutch with no trouble at all. Depending on how many miles and spare $$ you have, you have to balance the proactive maintenance cost against the risk and expense. Entirely your choice and preference.
3) I would go ahead and change the thermostat and thermostat housing, and possibly the lower hose connecting tube depending upon its condition. This is also the perfect time to replace your upper hose with one that goes around the outside of the serp belt (unless that has already been done).
4) I went with the lifetime warranty pump from Advance Auto, but mainly because I was stranded in their parking lot, 100 miles from home at the end of the work day, and just did not have much of a choice. It has run fine for 65K miles, and I've heard similar success stories from others who have used the Advance Auto unit.
210k + now on my rig. It spends most of its time now with a 14k fiver behind it. Not positive on the upper hose do you have any pics of this change? While I have it tore down this time I'm gonna go ahead and change the leaking pedestal o-rings and just hope the up-pipes doesn't start leaking. Does advance sell the thermostats And housing?
