My understanding of the modern multi-grade oils is that they give much better lubrication when you first start your engine cold. Y-blocks have a tendency to have problems getting oil to the upper end already, and if 10w-30 can get the oil flowing faster/better, I think that is the way to go. Perhaps one reason that some people use straight 30 weight is the big oil pressure reading they see on the guage at start up. Thick cold oil is harder to pump than thin cold oil so the pressure reading is high until the oil temp comes up. Multi grade should produce consistant pressure reading cold or hot. Am I wrong in my thinking on this? Jag
Just to "justify" or explain my logic on why I am running more and more 30wt as I get closer to change and considering pure 30wt for my next change... it is not to see that big nice number nope... it is to leave a heck of a lot less of the stuff on the driveway
My concern with using a straight-grade oil nowadays is that AFAIK, they aren't put thru any kind of testing the way mainstream multi-grades are. Because they have no hope of passing the tests for say an SJ rating, those include low-temp operation (startup). So what kind of additives do they have? If I were an oil company exec, I'd figure people buying straight-weight are using it in lawn mowers, in transmissions, or something other than motor vehicles. Do they have a full anti-oxidant package, full detergent package? Who knows. Undoubtedly a "racing" straight grade specialty oil probably does, but Pennzoil or Castrol off-the-shelf, no way of telling.
lol Castrol - you crack me up Ross... I couldn't find any straight weight oil 'cept the CHEEEAAP stuff... Family dollar doesn't carry that there fancy Quaker State stuff. (I think it is manufactured by Warren) The label says American XT on it.
Side Note: egge sells the high tech & highly praised rope replacement (Best gasket graphtite) - their part # is 2244 @ 5$ a piece (so $20 + shipping to do upper and lower front and back).
I'd be worried about that off-brand stuff, Bryan, shop upscale a little! AutoZone and WalMart have Pennzoil and other brands in straight 30. Use the cheap stuff on hinges and such.
PS on the rope seals -- http://reds-headers.net/index.php?ma...roducts_id=206 (note -- for V8, does the 226 have similar seals?) My Best Seals on the rear main have been leaking pretty bad, so I checked the oil pan bolts. Sure enough, a quarter turn loose. Hope that helps.
