Starter problems.....I think....

Hi. I'm new here and hope that someone can help.
I'm having problems with the starter, but at this point not even sure it that is it. Here's what is happening:
3 different times this has happened...when you go to start the truck (F150) it sounds almost like its racing and the starter continues to try to "start"...when you turn the key in the ignition to turn it off, it continues to attempt to start and makes a loud clacking type sound. You can take the key out and it continues to do this. I ended up gingerly disconnecting the battery to make it stop.
I've changed the starter 3 times now! My nephew who is a mechanic suggested the solenoid the last time. So I went to NAPA and bought one (although I did change it 6 or 7 months ago). Put that in and it worked like a charm....started it over about three or 4 times to make sure it worked. That was last week.
Yesterday, it happened again with the starter...luckily I was only a few blocks from my house, but there was nowhere I could leave the truck and got it home anyway. Pulled in the driveway and shut it off. Attempted to start it just to see what it would do and there is nothing...no click, no racing, nothing.
So.....at this point, I've changed the starter 3 times and the solenoid and still having the same problem.
Any ideas where to go from here??? Let me know if you need more info. Thanks for any help you can give.

Hi. I'm another newbie to this site, but I just went through a starter problem as well.

I looked at several eHow articles, and several YouTube vids on diagnosing starter issues in the process. They mention sometimes starter motors trying to start even when the ignition is supposed to be "off". Apparently this reflects some kind of improper electrical wiring connection(s) between the battery, ignition switch, solenoid, neutral safety switch, and / or starter motor.

In the absence of more expert advise from the sages here, try starting with this video. Which is accompanied by picture links to several other "how to" vids regarding starter motor and related issues.

Hope it helps.

Thanks....I will check this out and see if anything helps. In the meantime maybe you can also tell me how to view a reply that someone posted. I am new so I'm not sure how to view the replies. Yours comes up automatically but there is another on from someone else that I can't find a place to click to view. LOL, sorry, but this format is a little different so I'm still learning. Thanks.

far from an expert here - but if it were me, I'd get a new solenoid - ask if they have a heavy duty version.

Then with that in place - feel your battery terminals when you start the truck.

If they get hot - you know you've got a bad connection somewhere - like a loose ground connection.

If your starting system is drawing a lot of extra current, I think it's possible that the starter solenoid (relay) will weld itself together internally (at least enough to stick).

I'm also wondering - by the way you said you disconnected your battery if your terminals were tight. If not that could be your problem right there - drawing extra current.

By the way - any time the solenoid sticks like that - you'll probably find that a light tap on the solenoid with a wrench or something will free it right up - no that that is a solution to your problem - but it's at least easier than pulling a battery cable.

(I'm also assuming your solenoid is right out in the open like mine)

Thanks for the info. I had heard that tapping on the solenoid would help with unsticking ..... wish I would have known that at the time....trying to unconnect the battery was interesting to say the least...and sparked pretty good, LOL!
Found a guy down the street who worked for Ford in the parts dept. Pretty knowledgeable. He said it sounded to him like the ignition switch..in the steering column. I've already went to NAPA and bought one. I'm getting ready to take out the old one and put this one in. Hopefully this is the problem because I'm tired of trying to figure it out. I'll let you know if this works so that if anyone else has this problem it might be the right fix.

Could be - but does sound more like a sticking solenoid to me.

Hopefully the ignition switch was cheap if it that turns out not to be it.

Good luck with it. Would like to hear how it goes.
