I have a 79 f250 crew 4x4. I noticed the other day a very ugly squeeling noise while on the highway. It only happens after driving it for about 20 minutes. Is my clutch going out? 460 with a borg warner 4spd.
thanks
Does the squeal change when you push in the clutch?? If it does then it could be a dry throw out bearing, which would mean the same thing (labor wise) as replacing a clutch.
If it doesn't change noise, then describe where the noise sounds like it is coming from, and any thing or condition that causes the change of the squealing noise (i.e. acceleration, decel, light braking, hard braking, up shifting, down shifting, etc.).
its definitly the clutch area. Now its happening when the clutch is engaged or not engaged. Its more like a rattling maybe. I noticed the bellhousing is cracked by the clutch fork area too.
Have you checked the amount of gear oil in the trans? Also is the noise only happening when going down the road? A dry throw out bearing can squeal on you whether you are moving or not. If it's only doing it when driving, then take it into a reputable shop (one that has experience with transmissions) and let them listen/ check for possible bad input shaft bearing.
Regardless, if your bell housing is cracked, then I would start preparing for a transmission pull after checking for bad bearing first.
