Rear main seal replacement?

I'm having my tranny rebuilt and have been planning on having the rear main crank seal replaced while the tranny is off. Here's the thing - the tranny guy called me today and told me that that engine has the retainer plate over the seal, which means that 6 specials tools will need to be bought by me (he doesn't have them), the pan will have to be removed, and several hours will have to be spent replacing the seal. He said that the seal is in perfect condition and isn't weeping even a little bit, and that it looks like an aftermarket one to boot. It has 90k miles on it, and the only reason it's being rebuilt is because the oil seal for the TC is leaking when hot. The tranny guy thinks the seal will last 200k or more with no issues. Your thoughts would be appreciated, and thanks (sooner the better).

Forgot to mention that it's a 4R100, in an '03 F250 SD. I pull about 5k lbs in a 23' BP about 7k miles per year.

It does have a retainer on the back, but no special tools are needed. In fact, not 100% sure the retainer even needs to be removed. I put the better teflon seal in mine and it came with the crank sleeve installation piece to install it. I do agree the seal should be good to around 200,000 miles.

I just looked at AllData and they show 1/2 hour labor after trans removal to r&r seal, as an FYI.

Many thanks, I'm going to the Ford dealership and pick up the seal and install tool. The Tech said he'd install it tomorrow.

As an FYI I bought my seal from a CARQUEST store and it came with the sleeve install tool that allows the seal to slip over the crankshaft. Then I just used a piece of wood and gently tapped the seal in with the wood and a hammer.

Cparks, do you happen to have the part # for that seal? I'm on the phone with CARQUEST right now, and they don't have the seal with an install tool. The best one they have is a Viton seal..
