I replaced the rear main on my 91 302 and it was a single piece rear seal ($10) and there was no need to touch the oil pan. You have done the hard part and that is getting to the seal. Once you remove the flywheel/trans etc and expose the seal you are ready to remove it. Haynes guide had some good pointers. This is what I did: Use a small awl or something sharp to punch a hole in the seal and try to screw a small screw into the seal and catch one of the metal bands inside the seal. Before you try to pull it out, screw 3 or 4 screws into the seal so you can start pulling all around it. Be extremely careful though not to scratch the metal surface that the seal rests on or you may cause a later leak. Once the seal is removed, prep the surface, insert new seal, tap it in to make sure it seats and put all the pieces back together. It has been 6 months since I replaced mine and no leaks to date.
