front left hub making noise

2007 shift on fly 4WD-driving down road and front left hub starts making a grinding/scraping noise-slow down or shift into 4WD and noise stops-brakes OK-very intermittant-I thought all transferring action took place in xfer case-what am I overlooking? Thanks

I agree on the IWE I had to replace both of mine on my 2 week old truck (to me anyway).
