The temp gauge is not working in My '80, Even after driving it awhile on the highway, and getting it up to operating temp, it does not move off the cold mark. Any ideas as to what I need to look at?
Look on the top of the engine up front. There should be a sensor, usually in the intake, that has a single wire on it(red/white or white red). Take this wire off, and with the key in run, engine off, ground this wire to a good shiny spot on the engine block. The gauge should swing full scale hot or cold. Then take the wire off and let it hang in the air, touching nothing. The gauge should swing the opposite way. If it passes this test, then the wire and the gauge are good, and there is something wrong with the sensor. If you get a new sensor, make sure you use little to no sealer on the threads. It needs a good ground through the threads to work correctly.
A intake manifold probably doesn't have water in it on a six . Look in the head somewhere. Someone who has a six hopefully will write in and tell us where it is. I have never messed with a six cylinder.
On a 300 6, look at the two cylinders closest to the firewall. Now look beneath the manifolds. It should be there. I found it when I was replacing the manifold gasket and dropped the manifold and broke the temperature sender. I was able to see and replace it pretty easily from the bottom but I could do neither from above.
