Monkey Pox in the Mid West?
What the hell is this? Is it deadly?
Apparently you get it from "pet" ground squirrels. Who the hell has pet gophers? Are these the same gophers we shoot hundreds of as pests? If so, what are they worth.

Why do people insists on having these "exotic pets" as Letterman called them? When will people learn?
Gophers = Monkeypox
Monkeys = SARS
(That in itself is a little odd.
) Anyhoo, SARS was (and still is) hard on Toronto, I hope these areas don't have to deal with the same kind of consequences.

We have a few locals who have been selling them for quite a while now, and yes they are the same "rodents" that we shoot by the thousands, and still seem to get larger in population every year.
Problem is their natural predator, the ferret, is pretty much not seen any more, so the population grows un checked.
The Monkey Pox virus has never been in the Western Hemisphere until now, it was a jungle virus of South America. It was more than likely transfered in captivitly with a infected animal of South America.
From what i understand it is deadly to small childern and maybe adults.
To think that the tree huggers are trying to put the prarie dog on the endangerd species list, even though their population grows un-checked at almost expoteintal rates (even while heavy hunting).
EDIT:
Here's another article.

Sounds like it's closer to getting the chicken pox than anything serious.
I still can't get over the fact that people would acutally want a gopher as a pet. It takes all kinds I guess.
I'm amazed they survive and don't go "squirrelly" without being able to run and burrow.
Man, I hate to think about how much money I could have made as a kid. I got paid by the tail, turns out it was the rest of the animal that had real value!
City folk, go figure.
