Early 99' F350 4WD Crew SWD PSD - w/Banks Stinger Plus System
Installed the Tymar Air Intake System over the weekend. After the 1st 20 miles of testing my "ABS Light" came on and stays on. Shortly thereafter, my "Service Engine Soon" light came on. The next day those 2 light stay on and now my "Overdrive Off" light (on the shifter) flickers constantly on & off. And, the fourth symptom is the odometer needle flickers while drive + drops to zero as soon as I let off the pedal even though I am coasting at 25mph.
Only thing that happened during installation was I bumped a wrenck against the battery cable on the drivers side after removing the battery. Since the passenger side battery was still connected I got the expected spark.
Spoke to Dale at Tymar and he suggested I remove the negative cables on both batteries - turn light switch on (to pull a drain) - remove my Banks Chip - and let the truck sit overnight. I did that. This morning I turned the light switch off - reconnected the negative cables to the batteries - started truck - and immediately had the ABS Light On. Went down the road a 1/4 mile and started getting the Overdrive Off Light Flickering again. I immediate returned the truck to home.
Has to be some sort of electrical/computer failure? Right? Possibly from when I hit the wrench against the battery cable during installation?
NEED HELP !
Speed control sensor on your rear end went out. Real easy to replace your self. I paid Ford $180. to fix mine. It was $12.22 for the part. That was before I got smart and came to FTE. Of course $14.40 of that was for misc. charges. When I asked why they said it was for the EPA. When I insisted they put it down to shop rags. I'm still upset about that $180
I cannot stress enough the need to disconnect BOTH batteries on these trucks, whenever you do any wrench work on them. Shorting out anything, with accompanying sparks can cause havoc in the electronics. Dependent on which circuit felt the short, any amount of sensors could be reeling from overvoltage. Your truck sounds like the rear speed sensor is objecting to something, replace it certainly, but some of the other symptoms you relate are not usual with that problem. Fitting a Tymar is not going to trip anything, unless you disable, cutoff or otherwise interfere with any sensors that may be in that location.
I would suggest that you get whatever codes are showing read, and interpreted, preferably without getting Ford to fix the truck - my experience has shown me that Ford Dealers know NOTHING about Powerstrokes, and should be avoided at all times. When you know the codes, and what they mean, you could post here again and sombody will direct you to correct course of action to remedy the situation.
Thank you guys for all your help. Got my truck back home last night and I'm a happy camper ....again! Here's the run down:
Codes that were pulled - P0500, P1000, P060C.Vehicle Speed Sensor and PCM PAM interrupt. Tested Speed Sensor - found open circuit in sensor.
Replaced sensor, cleared codes, retested and ABS Light, Overdrive Off Light, Service Engine Soon Light, and Speedometer failures are GONE.
Oh by the way, went ahead and replaced my original (almost 5 years old) Motorcraft batteries since they decided to die out too.
