Your cheapest and easiest way cheaper than tearing the motor down because once you do that, you always spend more than you originally planned for, especially if you do it right.
just my $.02
Good luck.
You speek from experiance ! I have been there . It can be done though .
Okay. I have a friend who has a shop with a lift and knows his way around an engine so I think I might just look at buying a used engine. I want a 351, so what motor should I look for ?
If you have to pass emissions testing you need one with the emissions equipment from your year - although I don't remember what that is. If not, go with a 351HO, and they came out in 84. I say that because they had very little smog equipment.
No my truck is just old enough to be grandfathered for emissions here. I found a running 351 carbed with tranny for 500. He said he'd split the two and take 300 on just the motor. It has 130k on it and was running great when he took it out.
Rebuilding even a simple engine like older domestic V8s requires a careful touch and attention to detail, which in turn costs money to be sure. So, I'd also vote on the used engine idea. It's too bad these have been out of production for so long; it will be more difficult to find good low mileage examples because of it. But you never know. Keep an eye on Craiglist for someone bailing on a project they'd started...
