Hey guys I need to replace my transmission. It started to slip after I serviced my tranny and was told when it got to bad I would need to replace it. I was wondering if I could use a transmission out of a 94 5.8L auto? My truck is a 92 5.0L auto. If not could I get away with just changing my torque converter?
It's not slipping just seems to shudder when in 3rd or 4th. Around 30-45. Will the 94 transmission work?
Ok hold the phone a minute.. you're about to spend a boat load of money and do a load of work for no good reason. The trans in your truck is most likely the E4OD(see the trans code on the calibration decal on the drivers door pillar), this box is COMPLETELY computer controlled so the first thing you need to do is pull codes and fix any issue that you find.. and it doesn't matter if it's not a trans code because all sensor problems can effect trans operation in these trucks.
Serviced meaning you changed the fluids and filter? If so that should have no negative effect on the trans so it's possible you disturbed an electrical connector or device that is now causing your problem.
You may have put the wrong filter back in your 4X4 E4OD.
If you put a 2 wheel drive filter in it you will have all sorts of problems.
Also did you put mercon 5 in the E4OD or some other fluid?
I had a mechanic change the fluid and filter with me. I was told by him that after servicing the transmission it could start to have issues. The tranny was shifting nice and smooth before hand then I changed the fluid and filter and a day later I started noticing once it got up in to 3rd or fourth it would shudder. If you let off the gas and then get back on it again it would sometimes smooth out again, But know its almost always happening and gets worse as it warms up. I have a gauge I put in brand new to see what my temps where and at first I would barley get up to 100 degrees but as it got worse it seems to have no problem getting up to 140 or so. I was wondering if I could have an air pocket in the lines and that's part of my problem or if my tranny is just going bad.
What electrical connections should I be checking to see if I disrupted them? The only issue I think ive been having was my IAC. I cleaned it once and it helped but quickly went back to being dirty quickly. Im not sure if that would cause this or not.
When you cleaned the IAC you may have moved the wires to the TPS and the TPS can cause low oil pressure in the transmission. The problems is the TPS will not give a code a lot of times when it is bad as the computer has no way of knowing if the information from the TPS is right or not.
You just have to check the TPS with an analog VOM.
The TPS is on the end of the throttle shaft.
You can back probe the plug to it and check the voltage as you slowly open the throttle with the VOM. The needle should move up the scale from about 0.9 volts to about 4.5 volts DC at WOT. The needle should move smoothly without any jumps as it goes up the scale.
