If you need some extra traction for how you use the truck then it would be worth it.
You might be able to get a factory cheap from someone who has replaced theirs with a locker or a aftermarket limited slip.
A good aftermarket unit would be the Auburn High Performance Limited Slip that jetjock16 has. I think the cost on the Auburn is around $500-550 (but don't quote me on that price.)
I have the 3.73 LS. I haven't driven a comparable SD without a limited slip, but my LS doesn't seem to be all that great of an option.
I mean, I'm sure it helps a little, but I still spin 'em, even feathering the pedal, when I start out on a turn with even loose gravel or light water on the road.
I guess what I'm saying is that I really doubt it is worth the $$ and the hassle.
I do have the auburn, as DCS said its about $550.. my best mod yet.. but i really needed it cause im out in the sand dunes all the time!! The stock LS is one step up from a open diff. but not very effective on wet pavement etc.. it will help if you get stuck in the soup and you just keep the gas on and keep hitting the brake, it will transfer the power back and forth somewhat, as your current open diff would not..... i have a stock unit in my garage with perfect bearings still on it( dealer charges $75 a piece for bearings)... id have it too your door for $200... ie shipping would come out of my end....
Jetjock16..
LS came out at 14k miles, never hard use.
Forgive my ignorance, but will your LS fit my 2002 PSD DRW F350 that has the standard 3.73? If so I would be interested in taking that off your hands. I have no idea what there worth. How many miles were on it when it was yanked?
MC dady: my LS will fit any Sterlin 10.25/10.5 with any gear ratio.... you use your existing ring gear and speedo gear... i pulled it out with 14k miles on the truck.. no mods were done before that (no lift/tires etc).. just a daily driver stock truck.. my email is jetjock16(No Email Addresses In Posts!)..
they make a detroit locker for those sterling rear ends dont they? get one of those. i have on in my '89 suburban and with a truck that heavy you dont get any of the bad side effects like swerving and hopping, it does make noise and chirp tires through turns though, but thats fun. i have 36" swampers on my sub with my detroit and wen it rain i have all kinds of fun!!
