On a 1-10 scale how hard is it to replace an egr-cooler and the oil cooler yourself instead of paying a shop to do it? My local ford garage said I needed both replaced and I just wanted to find out how hard this is. Thanks for any info

How brave are you? Been into an engine rebuild before and have a nice area to work on your truck? Tools, stocked fridge? No children allowed within 500 yards when you get frustrated.

Really depends on your mechanical ability and we have complete PDF files to help you along.

Really, if you have some wrench turning skills it isn't too bad. The engine is way back in the truck and the hardest part (I think) is laying over the-radiator support, standing on the front tires, and sitting on the batteries long enough to get the job done.

Hi John,
Sorry, but stupid question time: Where is that "complete PDF Files" link located? It looks like it will be handy in the future, but I couldn't find it. Thanks! MIke

It is not too hard of a job. I have one torn down at work right now. Some advice I can give you is to be sure you clean any debris from around the intake manifold and oil cooler cover before you remove them. Also, don't clean the oil reservoir with any kind of rag or towel that will leave lint behind.

I have built and rebuilt gas motors in the past. My 05 was the first diesel I have ever worked on and I was nervous. When I called around to get a price on doing the same job your about to do I was shocked at the labor cost. I'm really glad that I did mine myself. Now I feel like I could fix anything on this truck myself(with the troubleshooting help from the guys on this site). The tech folder is a great resource along with srmastertech on YouTube. Cleanliness and lint-free rags are a must. Its a pretty easy job.

I would give the job a 6.0 on the 1-10 (Hmm)

I have not personally done the deed yet. But if you a calm type of person and
feel comfortable with a wrench and are willing to spend the time. There are a few
places where you may get frustrated and keeping cool and taking your time is necessary.
One of the places can be the turbo bolts or the exhaust clamps for the turbo. The one thing
that will drive some people crazy is the 2 bolts for the upper half of the stator. You can't
see then to size the socket wrench. They are 15mm if I recall it right. Also anti-size is your friend
put some on the turbo bolts when you reinstall them. I would also watch the Youtube videso

Tool video

Enjoy

Sean

OK seriously, I knew some wise-a** would come along and point to the link you had provided (Thanks sammy ), but what I meant was that it seemed like a good link to find in the tech folder. I looked in there, found some similar links, but not that specific one.... so I was wondering where I would find it if I went looking for it in the future (and couldn't find it in the myriad of links like it that I've saved on my computer). Thanks again.... and no, I wasn't drinking, I'm always like this....

We have the Tech Folder and the Index of Ford Manuals, the link I provided. You should be able to find what you need out of all that information, if not we can work on it and find something more specific to your needs.
