Help with paint damage

Hey everyone. Hope you're all enjoying our wonderful summer fun. I have an inquiry about what I should do for a temporary fix on my truck concerning paint damage. I posted a few weeks back about gas expansion causing a boatload of gas to force itself out of my tank and down the side of my truck, leaving a strip of destroyed point in its wake. It's down to the metal. I have done some some light sanding, but not too much. Is there a quick fix anyone can suggest to protect the metal without actually redoing the paint in that area just yet?

Based on my 20 seconds of talking to the body guys....

If it is old iron single stage, I suggest you take it to a body shop for some advice to see if they think they can match it, some of the guys are really good at the old iron single stage matching and can do it in a few hours, you might ask what you can do to prep it to save a few bucks.

If clear coated, the cost is going to be prohibitive for a patch, especailly if you are planning to repaint later. This advice is based on the input from the body shop that painted my truck.... they are of the opinion you have to paint "sections" if there is clear coat two stage where the base paint is damaged.

If incorrect, someone like Tin May with paint experience will correct what I have been told.

Rattle can would be a temporary fix, but gas will eat it if spilled again. Even clear coat won't stand up to gas very well.
Fixing your tank venting issues would be best, then repaint the area with the correct finish.
I try not to fill my tank to the top as well....

Thanks guys. Definitely learned my lesson about filling it up too high. From what I understand these old tanks have this problem quite often. It's not clear coated and will need to be completely reprinted some day, maybe. I am more concerned with protecting the exposed metal.

If you are just going to prime it try to epoxy prime. I don't know if you can get epoxy prime in a can. Epoxy prime is a sealer. Other primers will absorb water epoxy sheds water. You can get epoxy paint in a rattle can in rustoleum using appliance paint.
