Lead Paint

Was lead used in the paints on 1978 models? I have a 1978 F100 that I'm going to paint in the near future. I'm planning on trying to roll the paint on using Rustoleum and I need to sand the old paint down. I was wondering what kind of precautions I needed to take before I begin.

Maybe I should have posted that question. I just completely stripped a 79 crewcab. I don't know about the paint but I did find factory lead body filler under the paint in a couple spots. No matter what, wear a mask.

I don't think I need to go all the way to the bare metal. I was just planning on scuffing the paint and doing the necessary body work. Would a regular dusk mask be sufficient for sanding the paint?

Anything is better than nothing. If you can find a mask that seals well to your face that would be the best. The best things to use are respirators. They are usually made of rubber or silicon and have filter cartridges that can be replaced for different applications. 3-M, North, and some other companies make them and they are not really expensive. The dust created by sanding the paint is one thing but don't forget about all the nasty stuff in the resins of the body filler that you will be sanding also. Be prepared for a mess. The fine dust from projects like these goes everywhere.
