For Those Greasing Their Spline Joint

About every two years I need to grease my drive shaft's slip joint to "cure" that annoying, subtle, soft "clunk" when driving off.

I keep a three-ounce tube in my center console of Ford's special aquamarine-colored grease. It's called XG-8, and every good Ford parts counter man knows about it

Until recently, when I put the drive shaft boot back on, I secured it with a common plastic tie wrap. It may, or may not, last the two years. So far, I've been lucky.

However, recently I have become aware of something at Harbor Freight that will last far longer. See: 25 Piece 12" Stainless Steel Cable Ties

At the rate I use them for the boot, six bucks will buy an almost-lifetime (50-year) supply of them.

However, I suspect I'll find a lot of other (non-electrical) uses for them as time goes on.......

Nice find, Marv, and a great price too. I've had decent luck with a standard "poly" cable tie, but will probably pick up some of these.

Would there be any worry of the edge cutting into the boot?

Nice find....but I just use a snail-drive hose clamp. Works fine....and re-useable.

I just cut the crimped tie closest to the carrier bearing.. and when i put it back together... left it unsecured (!Ghasp).

Its been a couple months and have not seen any seepage. Will be keeping an eye on it.

If you don't like the import prices, you could always just take a piece of thin gauge galvanized wire and use some pliers to twist the wire so it's as tight as this would be.

Might be low tech, but folks have been using that method for years to fix things. I don't know the prices over there, but here you can buy 1/4 mile of 14 ga. galvanized wire (electric fence wire) for around $20. (used baling wire is another good substitute, but it's a much heavier gauge)

Home Depot carries them as well. I found them while searching for an effective way to secure header-wrap a few years ago.

I got the steel ones from HF a couple years ago and could not figure out how to make them stay tight, they kept slipping back out on me, and they wouldn't pull up very tight to begin with.

Does it really cost that much to "mail" something down there or or is it a mandatory customs/duty thing that everything goes through regardless of "shipping" method? There was a thread some time ago - not sure if here or another forum - that was building a 7.3 Toyota Landcruiser in S. Africa and could not get some parts into the country no matter what.

I did this at 105k like 6 years ago. Took a flat head screw driver and pried the stock clamp apart just enough to move the boot. Greased it with Lucas red and tacky then reinstalled the same clamp using a set of wire nippers not cutters to squeeze the clamp back together. Works great and able to obtain stock clamp. When I get home I will take a pic of the nippers and show y'all how I did it
