I will be reinstalling the stock fuel tank inside the cab of my '66 Ford F100. Does anyone have a good source on replacement padding for underneath and the back side of the tank? A 3/4" thick butyl foam rubber sheet material would seem to work well, but I have not found a reasonably priced source yet.
Dan: I had the same issue, and I trolled Home Depot and found a garage door bottom seal that seemed to be a good rubber and it worked great. I just cut is to the size and shape that I needed. So far, no squeaks, or rattles. I also used some rubber washers on the bolts along the top.
The product is:
MD Building Products 2 in. x 16 ft. Rubber Replacement for Garage Door Bottom ($14.97)
originally I believe the grooved/carrier area of the lower plates were dipped in liqid rubber...much like the sun visor retainer clips. Aside from that I would find an old inner tube carcass and cut out sections for the other locations originally padded.
I sprayed the bottom pieces which retain the tank (the rear cab mount bolts pass through) with several heavy coats of rust-o-leum leak seal rubber spray coating which replicates the original coating nicely. Then inserted a piece of glass bedding into the V-groove into which the bottom tank flange rests and also used glass bedding between the tank and cab where the top bolts are to cushion and prevent rattles.
