Well, my head gaskets failed on me. I pulled the cab off and did the work to get the heads off. Took the heads to NAPA to get them checked and I guess nobody here will be surprised...they were both cracked.
I'm stationed at Camp Pendleton here in Southern California in the hunt for some new heads. If anyone on here has some help for me then it would be greatly appreciated. My engine was built in October of 2005 so it's a 18mm dowel.
I did read on another forum that some people just say screw it and put the cracked heads back on at the advice of their machinist because "the new ones will just crack again anyways." Is there any support for this on here?
Do the work and do it right so you don't have to do it again....
Your truck broke, but it's a golden opportunity to fix it better than it was.
Get two new heads from Tousley, get some ARP studs, and replace the "hard to reach with the cab on" parts like the STC fitting and even the dummy plugs and stand pipes. You could also delete or replace the EGR cooler with a stronger unit if you're in a state that tests for emissions.
I have the cab held up by a 2.5 ton winch and a huge gambrel we made from boxed steel and round stock. The cables are bolted through the body mounts.
Guys, I know it sounds like lunacy to you all but I'm am not made of money and paying $2000+ for new heads is just never going to happen. I had to take a loan out to get the complete solution kit from Sinister. It will replace the old oil cooler, the EGR cooler with their bullet proof one, ARP studs, and the factory style head gaskets. that was $1400 in it's self.
I found a couple sets of heads from low mileage trucks that are going to be magnafulxed next week and the good ones will go back on. I know it's a risk but one I have no choice in taking.
I just have to hope that this makes the difference and gets it back on the road right. I may be able to get the stand pipes but that would be a huge leap.
got pics of where they are cracked at ? There's a thing called micro cracks and that doesn't affect the head. I wouldn't want one of our guys serving our country to get beat by somebody that doesn't understand the 6.0
Im pretty sure you can buy inexpensive adapters to run the 20mm heads as well...because thats what we put on my 03 when both heads were cracked
When my heads were replaced, I thought I was told by the mechanic that the heads came with adapters to fit the later model heads for my application. Dowel adapters maybe? I think that's what he said... Or maybe he was talking about the gasket set, like NP said. But the new replacement heads were for the later engine application 20 mm I believe.
Yes i was forgetting the name, dowel adapters. We put 20mm heads on my truck, dont remember the exact reasoning if they were better or cheaper or what, but i just mentioned it so the OP can widen his search to 20mm heads as well. Around here 18mm heads seem to be scarce and overpriced, but not sure if its the same around his area
