Hey gang, I test drove a new f150 stx with sync and was seriously considering it, but my research has shown that the sync system is very problematic. The particular truck I was considering is a 2013 without navi or touch screen but it had the sync/microsoft logo next to th usb port.
Should I pass on this truck until Ford works out the bugs? Thanks in advance for any advice.
Have a 2013 stx myself, same non-nav sync basic. Works great, not 1 problem. I use a USB thumb drive with all my music on it or Bluetooth stream from my phone.
I dunno, just started reading about how Ford was dropping in reliability ratings due to it's issues with sync. As a potential new owner, I figured I'd better research a bit more before pulling the trigger.

Hi robbgt, thats what I was looking for - it sounds like you have the same truck I'm considering. The one I drove had the 5.0 engine and was pretty darned impressive. How do you like your truck? Thanks again for the info.

Not 1 problem with sync in my 2012. I actually dislike driving vehicles without it now.
I wouldn't pass on the truck just because it had sync and you heard that sync can be problematic. If it gives you any trouble just don't use it. Then all you'll have is an am/fm radio with a CD player, which is all you'd have in a truck not equipped with sync in the first place.
I have not had any problems with Sync in my 2012. My wife's BMW has the iDrive system and the Sync system is much more intuitive, easier to use, and more useful, than the iDrive system.
I never thought I would want/use my Sync, but it came with the FX4 package, and I must say, I've become pretty spoiled with some of the features it offers. The earlier versions had a few hiccups, but nothing major and all fixed under warranty. I say go for it.
I would not buy anything new if it didn't have at the bare minimum of at least sync, adds a lot to resale weather you use it or not! I have a 2012 and at this point don't have any issues, Iphone pairs up and it works well, the reliability ratings went down because many people are not familiar with the technology more so than any real failures, like anything else, it will require a learning curve by the manufacturer and the customer. Also in the future the state governments will make having a phone in your hands verboten, hands free tech is a must!
Sync itself hasn't been a problem in my '12 either. But the microphone for the bluetooth is. It likes to pickup background noise that the person on the other end hears, and hampers the conversation. That was with even the stock exhaust, blower fan off, windows up, etc.. I compensate by using my handsfree earpiece with noise cancelling mic.
Hey everyone, thanks for the replies, now that I've read a bit more, it appears the issues I was reading about are related to the touch screen system (my ford) or something to that effect.
If sync only relates to cell phone/ipad integration, than it's a non-issue. My wife really did like the truck, it was black with color matched bumper. Very sharp. I have to make a decision by Sunday to take advantage of the incentives.
Does this system sync up with my ipod and charge it? I assume thats part of the 'sync.'

Have no fear of Sync but I would wait until they perfect color TV before buying one.........

Steve, I love the truck so far Mine is the 5.0 also.. Prior I had 1995-1997 F-Series trucks (1 5.0 and 2 powerstrokes) so the ride on this is amazing compared. Power is smooth and mileage is great considering the weight of these trucks. I have a relatively heavy foot and do 95% in town driving and I see 16.5 MPG on the gauge. I'm only at 1800 miles so engine is still breaking in. On the highway at 75 I've returned ~19-20 MPG this is with 4x4 and 3.55s

My girlfriend has the touch-screen sync in her '13 escape and I am not a fan of it so I can understand your hesitation. It is very lagy for something that should react instantaneously. On my stx, using the USB connection, it will charge and play from your iPod. You can even tell it an artist or song you wish to play and it will find it and play. Very cool to never have to take your eyes off the road.
Good luck with the purchase! Be sure to post up pics
Hey Everyone, thanks for the replies. You guys put my feeble mind at ease. I had a silverado 1500 back in 2000 and switched to a subaru a while back due to fuel price/economy, but I've missed/wanted a truck ever since. I ride motorcycles and have a trailer and it's nice to not have to rely on anyone to haul it.
My Chevy had some lagging issues that really bothered me. Nothing major, but stupid little things. My Dad has always loved ford and has had good luck with them so I'm about 99% sure I'm going to go with the new F150.
Back in the day, my Dad had a 1990 ranger that me and my Brother drove, unfortunately, my Brother punished that thing, but you couldn't kill it.
