Hi, I have a 1993 F-250 4x4 7.3 IDI 5 speed with a Banks Turbo. I am told the engine has 190,000 Engine has no visible blow by and uses no oil by 6.9/7.3 standards. Before I put the turbo on it there was one instance that it got kind of cranky when starting it. The engine was plenty warmed up and had been hauling a horse and trailer in hot weather. Since I put the turbo on it did it one time with me yesterday. Again, warm day, engine warmed up fine, hauled a load of 24 bails of hay. Went to start the truck and it did not start up as its jovial self. Took two or three tries and that was with several seconds of cranking.....now it's all seems to be fine. I really don't know the age of the injector pump or the injectors. The pump does have seals on it from either the factory or a rebuild shop. The only thing that I can almost say positively is it idles just a little rough,(most people wouldn't notice) and the engine seems to run a little quiet compared to my older 6.9 I had. Really kind hard to tell about the "quiet-ness" since I don't have another IDI to compare it with.
Hi Eric - lots of posts on this forum to do with hard starting. do a search for "hard starting" or "no start" or "air intrusion" to see what people have to say about this stuff.
What I have to say (just my opinion, recently formed after a long episode with hard starting) is change out your mechanical lift pump. Easy to do, relatively cheap part, then you have some confidence that you have good fuel delivery to your IP. Replacing a starter is 4X the money, and you will end up having to do that if you go too long with the superlong cranking sessions.
