the big decision

i need ur guys addvice. My 48 (which i will upload pics this weekend) has small surface rust spots the largest about the size of a quarter of a hand. this is my only ride, should i sand it down and repaint it(which i really dont have the time to do it fast cause i play 3 sports and work in the summers) so should i take care of that now or wait 2 years when i graduate from hs?

Drive it, enjoy it, you almost certainly don't have the skills or tools to do it right (no offense). You'd need a MIG welder and be practiced at welding thin steel. When you post pics we can judge better. In the meantime, concentrate on school, it's much more important!

Surface rust is where the protective paint has deteriorated from weather, wear, or other damage exposing the bare metal underneath to moisture forming a coat of rust that does not penetrate into the metal. Surface rust (some refer to it as patina) is different tan corrosive rust that eats holes thru the metal. Corrosive rust usually is due to moisture combined with corrosive salts (found in mud, acid rain, road salts) remaining in contact with the metal for an extended length of time.
Surface rusts acts much like paint, if it stays dry it will not progress into the metal very quickly, so if what you have is surface rust, there is no great urgency to do anything about it. If it concerns you, rub off the loose rust with a clean coarse cloth like burlap, and give it a coat of rattle can flat clear right over the surface rust. That will protect it for a few years or at least until you get done with school.

I agree with the others; don't be overly concerned with it. Surface rust is generally benign. Not hurting anything. Even if you had rusted out areas, like in fenders or cab corners, they're already bad and not going to get significantly worse in a couple years since the metal needs replaced anyway. Remember, it took 60 years for your truck to become in the condition it's in, so 1 or 2 more isn't going to make any difference in the big picture. Just get your truck running dependably and safe, and enjoy it until you have time and money to do more with it.

Welcome to the site YoungF1.
I just read your intro thread, I think that's very cool that you have an F1 at 15 years old.

Do your best with what you have on that rust spot and hit it with some rattlecan primer. Leave it, you'll get to bodywork later on.

Do your research. This site is your #1 source. Whatever you are thinking, it's been done already, and they probably took pictures, or will if you ask.

Get it to stop, start, and steer. Try to ignore all the little details you are going to fix. Try to ignore all the custom work you are going to do later on...Get it to stop, start, and steer first. Drive it for awhile before you start making major changes. (Engine, suspension, drivetrain, etc.)

Don't get hung up with the "let's make it pretty" idea. That comes later. You'll waste alot of time and alot of money if you start there. Believe me.

Good luck, post lots of pictures of your build!

But I got ta say becoming a supporter is the fastest and easiest way to post pics right from
your whatever pad/cell thing or home computer.
Few of us look in the users Gallery or album as you can see by your recent visitors.

It seems awkward, but whenever you "insert a picture" to one of these threads, the forum is looking for the picture somewhere on the web (which is always available) rather than from somewhere on your hard drive (which isn't always available).

While you're making a post on FTE, select the pic you want to post from your Photobucket album. When the large version of the pic is open, right mouse click on it and select "View Image Info". The image info will be highlighted and will look something like this:
The best photos and videos | Photobucket

Copy that highlighted info (right click / copy).

When you have the spot in your post where you want the pic to be placed, select the "Insert Image" icon at the top of the post (looks like a mountain) and paste (right click / paste) the image info you copied in the highlighted box (just shows "http://" when it opens).

Your pic will be placed in the post.

Hope that helps.
